THE JOKE THAT BECAME A GOODBYE
THE JOKE THAT BECAME A GOODBYE
It all began in the office, where a boy met a girl who would soon become the closest friend he had ever expected.
Their bond grew effortlessly, shared lunches, endless conversations, and video calls that stretched late into the night. They understood each other in ways no one else did.
Even when she had to resign from the job, nothing changed. If anything, their connection deepened. They continued talking for hours, laughing, sharing their days, and leaning on each other through everything. He cared for her like family, sometimes more than he realized.
One day, in a moment of playful mischief, he decided to tease her.
“I think I love you,” he said, expecting her to laugh it off, expecting it to be just another inside joke.
But she didn’t laugh.
She froze, confused, unsure how to respond.
Slowly, she began avoiding him, not because she was angry, but because she didn’t know what his words truly meant.
He didn’t take her reaction seriously at first. He continued teasing her, caring for her, and talking to her the same way as always.
He thought she would eventually understand it was a joke.
But life had other plans.
Her family arranged her marriage, and she had no choice but to accept. The boy wanted to meet her one last time to explain, to tell her the truth, to see her reaction, perhaps even to understand his own.
But she never came.
Once the confusion grew into distance, she didn’t know how to face him anymore.
And so, without a fight, without a goodbye, their friendship faded.
She got married.
He remained silent.
And the joke that was never meant to be serious… became something serious only in her heart.
She lost a friend for life.
And he lost a story that could never be rewritten.
